[Beens Prayer Partners] a stressful event

Dear Friends and Family,

Dan received some upsetting news this week and it all came to a head tonight.

Just over two months ago, one of the men, Domingos, that has been a disciple of Dan's approached him for advice due to problems with his wife's family (parents, siblings, uncle/aunt, etc).  An uncle was beating the wife to get her to leave Domingos because he was not strong enough to help in the family business.  They were living on the wife's family's land in an area called Muesiha.  Then six weeks ago because of continued problems with the wife's family and upon the advice of several other Mozambicans, Domingos and his wife moved to the city, Nampula.  He was now needing a job and we'd just had a guard position open up so we gave Domingos employment thinking he had proven himself faithful over the months of studying with Dan.   This is the same man that Dan was supposed to be working with the last two Sundays at a church Domingos had started in Muesiha.  I say 'supposed to' because at the beginning of the month Domingos gave a very lame excuse as to why Dan could not travel to teach at the church.

Over this past weekend his wife showed up at our house and said she needed to talk to him and us.  She accused him of having left her without food or money, said she had not seen him for weeks and that he had married another women.  Domingos did not show up for work on Sunday night, though when he came in on Monday night Dan confronted him about the accusations and he denied them all (though later in the night he did confess more to our 2nd guard so we knew he hadn't been completely honest with us).

Over the course of the next few days his wife went to some church leaders to talk with them.  These church leaders talked with me and I told them what I "knew".  They affirmed that he had not been going to church and that things seemed strange. They arranged a meeting with him and his wife on this past Wednesday but Domingos did not show up.  Wednesday afternoon Domingos' wife showed up here and talked with Robin some and said she really wanted to speak with Domingos.  As he wasn't scheduled to work again until Friday Robin gave her some food and suggested that she could come back then.

Tonight his wife came to our house to talk with him and us.  Domingos showed up drunk and became agitated when his wife accused him of abandoning her.  He then said he had already married another women and was finished with the first wife (sorry we don't know her name).  Wife number 1 asked us for part of his salary so she could go home to where she was from, Muesiha.  Domingos said that when she left he would leave with her to go get his things from their house.  Dan was worried that Domingos would leave with her and end up beating her.  A quick phone call was made to our teammates for advice and they suggested we go get other Mozambicans to help out.  Robin, the Brave Missionary in Deep Dark Africa, shoots out our door well after dark to walk down to get our house worker (Rabia) and her husband (Antonio), two faithful Christians that we trust.  Dan started thinking how dumb it was to let his wife go wandering off in our neighborhood after dark, but Robin the Brave soon returned.  By this time Domingos was very agitated and demanding his pay for the time he had worked.  Domingos' antics increased and Robin and Dan left the scene to let the Mozambicans work it all out.  They soon called us out of our house to hear the solution.  Domingos and his wife had decided to leave together so he could get his clothes because he was accusing her of stealing them.  She did not trust him to leave without her because she felt Domingos would steal the pots and pans (the only possessions she has).  We continued to explain that we did not want her to leave in a situation that could be dangerous for her.  She continued to ask for part of Domingos' salary so she could gather her things and go back to Muesiha.  Dan went into the house to get Domingos' salary and ended up paying him all of it instead of giving some to her.  He then stood up counted the money and started to leave.  Antonio and Dan both said, "You need to give some money to her."  Domingos said, "No I don't, she came here to this house for help, I am not going to help her, she is not my wife anymore. She can stay here!"  Antonio, Rabia, us and our guard were all amazed at what Domingos said.  Antonio was disgusted.  Domingos walk out of our yard.  This proved that the only reason he wanted to leave our yard with his wife was to beat her and get any money we would have possible given her.  Robin and Dan again reiterated our concern for her safety and said that it would be best for Antonio and Rabia to walk with Domingos' wife to her house and make sure Domingos was not waiting for her or stealing her pots and pans.  We said if things seemed unsafe she would be welcomed to stay at our house or if Antonio and Rabia did not mind with them.  Of course she picked Antonio and Rabia's house because she would have been very uncomfortable in our house.

So all this to say, please pray for Domingos and his ex-wife.  Pray for the church that Domingos started as there are few believers there and he has just destroyed any witness as to who Jesus is and why Christians are different from others.  Pray for us as this has been emotionally draining for us.  Domingos traveled with Dan twice a month to Netia, he studied with Dan, and Dan had visited his church.  It is sad to see so much of Dan's time, effort, teaching, and discipleship apparently thrown away.  While our limited vision doesn't let us see how, we trust that God will be glorified in this somehow.  Please pray for these things, for Domingos to realize what he's doing and have true repentence, and for Domingos' ex.-wife to remain strong in Christ.

Thank you for your prayers,

Dan and Robin

[Beens Prayer Partners] Please Praise God and thank Him with us

Dear Friends and Family,

We would like to ask you all to give God thanks for protecting Asher today.  Our family and our teammates all went to a local restaurant that has a pool.  It is a place we like to go to relax, enjoy good food, and swim.  We were having a wonderful day, swiming, and talking.  We had just finished eating when I, Dan, heard Karunia yelling Asher's name. I looked up to tell Karunia to stop yelling and then saw why she was yelling.  Asher had gotten in the pool without his lifevest and was under the water.  The only part of him that could be seen was the very top of his head.  I yelled "he's drowning".  Robin, I and a worker started running to the pool side.  Our teammate, Sarah, got to the pool side first and jumped in and pulled him up.  He and all of us were shaken but very thankful that he did not drowned.

Please thank God for His protection of Asher, letting Karunia see Asher, for Sarah getting to him, and that Asher is okay.

We are very thankful to God for all He did today!

Praising God,

Dan and Robin Been

[Beens Prayer Partners] Oct prayer letter

Dear friends,                                                                                         October 2006

We trust you are doing well.  Enjoy your weather as it is cooling down – ours is clearly heating up and while the hottest days of summer are still a couple months away, we are beginning to feel the heat.

Praises:

  • I (Robin) am actually getting this letter out ON TIME!
  • Rejoice with us this month as we celebrate the gifts God has given us in our children!  Asher turns 3 years on the 2nd, Karunia turns 8 years on the 18th and Esperansa turns 1 year on the 20th!!  Also Dan’s Grandmother and Robin’s mom have birthdays this month and we are equally thankful for them!
  • Teammates are returning from work elsewhere/furlough.  Jacob Michael is currently on route, driving back to Nampula.  He’s had some car difficulties but Lord willing will arrive on Friday the 5th.  Jeremy and Martha Smith who work north of us are currently in S. Africa and will arrive in Nampula tomorrow, the 2nd, for a few days of shopping before finishing their journey home after their furlough.  Shawn and Sarah Gardner have also now arrived in S. Africa and will be arriving back here on Monday the 9th.  It’ll be good to catch up with these teammates who’ve been gone for 4-6 months! Laura Rosten, our new teammate has now been here for 1 month.  Though I’m sure she’ll have many cultural moments ahead of her, she is settling in very well and has gotten a great start in her language learning.
  • Again Dan’s travel to Netia went well this month and he was able to visit 2 other locations from which some of the leaders who study with him come.
  • Karunia, Josiah, and I have now completed the majority of 1st grade!  We’re going to continue on with reading as we’re a touch behind there and will pick up with this year’s curriculum in a couple weeks once I’ve had time to regroup and organized.
  • Attendance in the weekend classes continues to be high.  Numbers are down by one or two but Dan’s pleased to still have 12 in the class.
  • Izebiu, the man who fell off the roof while doing renovations at the center is recovering well.  Surgery on his back seems to have been successful and he has now been released from the hospital.
  • Josiah has gotten started on his chicken project.  He’s now the proud owner of 14 chicks who are living happily in a box in our bathroom for another couple weeks, until old enough to move out to the coop we’ve had made.  He’s doing a great job taking care of them so far and is very excited.
  • While trying to figure out the details surrounding our necessary trip to S. Africa later this year we learned of two other missionary families who needed to go.  We’ve decided to all “caravan” down together which should make traveling a bit nicer (and safer).
  • Esperansa recovered from her episode of diarrhea.
  • A new Sunday School class has decided to pick us up for financial support.  We’re so thankful for God’s provision.

 Requests:

  • Patty Maddux was expected to arrive this upcoming Friday for a 6 wk internship.  We received a phone call from her earlier this week saying her youngest son has been hospitalized and she’s going to have to postpone her trip.  Please pray for her son’s recovery and also for wisdom on her part as she tries to figure out a good time to reschedule her internship.
  • For the Sundays of the 8th, 15th, and 22nd our family will be heading out to the area of Muesiha for church.  One of the men Dan meets with (Domingos) started a new church in this area.  Pray these times of teaching will be a help to Domingos and an encouragement to the church there.  (Those within this church are all extremely young in the faith or non-Christians who are observing and learning).
  • Dan will be traveling to Netia on the 11th & 18th of this month for his normal teaching times.  Pray for safety in travel on his part as well as the men who walk so far.  Pray the teaching times would go well.
  • The 2 day per month class will be held the 26th & 27th of this month.  Pray for those traveling in to the city to study and for teaching times to go well.
  • Continue to pray for those involved in the weekend classes and those who study with Dan in a one-on-one relationship.
  • Pray for the final 2 GNFA families who will be returning from furlough soon.  I think both are due back this month as well, but don’t know the dates.  Jaynie Michael (wife of Jacob) will be returning from a trip to the States around the 23rd of October so please pray she has a safe flight.
  • Two of our Mozambican friends are due to deliver babies this month.  Please pray all would go well during the end of their pregnancies and that the babies would be healthy and arrive without any complications.  Life here is so fragile and death is all around – many families won’t even name a baby until it is a month old because the infant mortality rate is so high.

We pray blessings on each of you, in your lives and work and families and ministries.  We appreciate your support!

Robin & Dan
