History: Mozambique was a Portuguese colony until 1972 when a civil uprising occurred which forced the Portuguese to leave. At this point a Marxist regime took hold of the country and soon thereafter a civil war began which would continue for 17 years. The Marxist regime was funded by communist countries and the rebel fighters by surrounding countries which didnŐt want a communist country at their borders. The civil war ended in 1990 with final peace accords being signed in 1992. The country is now a democracy and though still far behind is making strides towards recovery from the war and colonization.
